Baggy Jeans Are Your Passport To The London It-Girl Look This Autumn

Some girls just know good denim. CC: Lila Moss and Iris Law, the couple of twenty-somethings showing New Yorkers what great jeans days in London look like while shopping in Manhattan.

Wearing the kind of model off-duty looks that are centred around Depop scores and trophy handbags (Moss Junior’s YSL Le 5 à 7 shoulder style is a Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz favourite), the pair’s outfits were remarkable precisely because they are unremarkable. It requires a certain attitude to pull off louche denim and, unlike American It-girls in their strict Khaite Danielle jeans, Lila and Iris don’t care that their jeans pool around the pavement – sorry, sidewalk! – picking up the city’s detritus.

Moss and Law’s throw-on-and-go jeans, which gently slope off the hips leaving a hint of midriff on display, follow the Vogue editors’ denim diktat in The Adelphi. Classic workaday trousers should, says associate market editor Honey Sweet Elias, feel like “a slouchy tracksuit but in denim form”, while Global Fashion Network deputy director, Laura Ingham, notes that oversized boyfriend jeans are her wardrobe staple because their relaxed versatility means “you can wear them with anything.” Fashion rule number one: Effortlessness is key.

Indeed, the quiet joy of wearing baggy denim is that super-slouchy jeans look laid-back with trainers (Miu Miu X New Balance and Wales Bonner X Adidas are firm favourites at Vogue HQ) or Uggs (yes, really) by day, yet contrary and cool with a sparkly mule by night. Faded, whiskered and occasionally ripped jeans shouldn’t work with a slipper-like heel, but they give the impression that you could leg it from a party at any minute to attend something more fabulous – or just frequent the pub (because how fabulous). Lila and Iris might have been photographed stocking up on Airlift leggings at Alo, but a quick flick through their Stories shows that a H&M Christmas party later called for more low-slung jeans and crop tops. Party dresses are so passé – unless worn with sneakers – this season.

While the tabloids buzzed with the news of two nepo babies enjoying everything NYC has to offer (Golden Diner has Law’s heart), don’t we really all just want to be told what to wear? Loose-fitting denim is your passport to the London look this season. But, whatever you do, don’t look like you’ve planned that good jeans trip.
