For the past few winters, I’ve been hesitant to get on board with knitted hoods. Miuccia Prada’s autumn/winter 2021 collection, which was set against the epic snowscape of the Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites, inspired me to try one post-lockdown, while two years ago, a picture of Chloë Sevigny tempted me once again. I wear hoodies a lot, but the shapes of the knitted hoods I’ve tried previously haven’t served me well. As a colleague so kindly put it, the way that some styles framed my face made me look like “a novelty doll you’d find in a claw machine at an arcade”.

But, when the temperatures recently dropped, I decided to give them another go. Referring back to Miu Miu and the Sevigny reference, I’ve opted for loose-fitting styles with visible strands of hair and the bottom of the hood tucked under the collar of a coat. When I wear them, I still look quite doll-like, but with multiple layers plus sunglasses – and the excuse of a freezing forecast – I’m into it. And if the streets of London are anything to go by over the last few weeks, so are many other people.
To maximise the warmth factor, I’d recommend sticking to fabrics like wool – this 100 per cent lambswool style from homegrown brand &Daughter is a great example – and relaxed silhouettes. Styles with a little more material on the bottom also negate the need for a scarf (unless it’s really cold), while a zip gives you a little flexibility when in indoors (Tube + knitted hood = heat fest). I’m currently in discussions with my crochet-savvy flatmate, who’s going to make me one with horns (!) in the spirit of this Coperni hood.
